History

Postgraduate Law Program

The Postgraduate Program in Law at PUC Minas was created in 1997, with the Master's degree course, which offered a Specialization Course in Procedural Law. Three years later, the Program began offering PhD courses as well, initially focused on Procedural Law. The program currently offers three Specialization Courses and nine lines of research and has a body of 41 permanent Professors (six of whom have gotten their Doctoral degree in the Program itself).

In 2009 the Program expanded to include its first Inter-institutional Master's degree (Minter) in collaboration with the State University of Montes Claros (Unimontes). This course – which was encouraged by CAPES – consists of the creation of a "special condition" Master's class. This type of course can only be offered by a postgraduate program recognized by MEC and already consolidated, as is the case with PUC Minas' Postgraduate Program in Law. When it comes to the University's partnership with Unimontes, the "special condition" in question refers to the fact that part of the teaching and research activities of the course takes place at a different Campus. Thanks to well-structured partnerships or inter-institutional cooperation, this type of initiative allows for the use of the competence of already established postgraduate programs and enables the training of professors outside the major educational centers.

Until 2020, 370 doctors and 1211 masters were graduated by the Program.
