The Democratic Republic of the Congo is undergoing one of the worst humanitarian crises of
the 21st century. For over 25 years, various conflicts have been occurring in the region,
threatening civilian lives, impacting local security, and causing unprecedented humanitarian
problems. The UN has carried out numerous operations in the DRC, primarily utilizing
MONUSCO troops to ensure security and support for civilians in the region. But how
effective are MONUSCO? If the UN has been concerned about the Democratic Republic of
the Congo for years, why do levels of violence and insurgent groups continue to increase?
At the 2023 UNSC, we will discuss these issues and why they persist.
